Ramadaan: seeking and obtaining forgiveness

by Simple Muslimah

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

*Ramadaan is a time when many Muslims stop, take stock of their lives and turn to their Lord seeking forgiveness*

Sometimes- when it comes to the religion- we focus our efforts purely on trying to pursue good deeds and as a result neglect spending time trying to atone for our ugly ones.  Sometimes our zeal to seek Allah’s reward means we fail to prioritise asking for His forgiveness, something we are desperately in need of seeking.

Imam Ibn al-Jawzi رحمه الله was once asked:

“Is it better for me to make Tasbeeh (praise Allah) or to make Istighfaar (seek forgiveness)?”

He replied:

“The dirty robe is more in need of soap than perfume”

Ramadaan is a time when many Muslims finally stop and reflect on the manner in which they are living their lives.  It is a time when many of us really hold ourselves to account and are confronted with our many failings.  With this realisation we turn to the Lord of Mercy fearful because of our transgressions, but also hopeful of their forgiveness because- unlike anyone else- His Mercy knows no bounds.

Say: “O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. [39: 53]

May Allah the Most High make us of those who seek forgiveness this Ramadaan (and always) and may He accept it from us.  Ameen.
